On 30 January 2020, the first case was confirmed in Kerala's Thrissur district in a student who had returned home for a vacation fromWuhan University in China.

And it has been almost 6 months since the first case in India was confirmed and the number of patients have just kept on increasing.

At present, India has had 1.24M Positive cases so far, out of which 783K have recovered whereas, sadly 29,861 of lives have been lost. From starting with 01 confirmed case in India at the end of January 2020, the number of cases have reached 45,720 cases in a single day.

The Government of India has been taking several measures since the beginning and had put a countrywide Phase-I lockdown for 21 days, from 23rd March 2020, under Prime MinisterNarendra Modi's. Nearly all services and factories were suspended. People were hurrying to stock essentials in some parts.

Phase-II lockdown, On 14 April, PM Modi extended the nationwide lockdown till 3 May, with a conditional relaxation promised after 20 April for the regions where the spread had been contained by then.

Phase-III lockdown, On 1 May, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Government of India (GoI) further extended the lockdown period to two weeks beyond 4 May, with some relaxations.

The country has been split into 3 zones: red zones (130 districts), orange zones (284 districts) and green zones (319 districts). The zone classification would be revised once a week.

Phase-IV lockdown, On 17 May, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) extended the lockdown for a period for two weeks beyond 18 May, with additional relaxations.

Even though lockdown was implemented for nearly 2 months in the country, there were still relaxations being added on the basis of the number of case in and around the areas.

After 18th May 2020, The Government of India started the Unlock phase in the country.

Unlock 1.0 (1–30 June), lockdown restrictions were only be imposed in containment zones, while activities were permitted in other zones in a phased manner.

Unlock 2.0 (1–31 July), lockdown measures are only imposed in containment zones. In all other areas, most activities are permitted. Night curfews would be in effect from 10p.m. to 5a.m. in all areas.

Even though the economy of India was effected during this pandemic, unemployment has increased, many businesses have been closed and even wages have been reduced. The Government's decision of country's lockdown criteria was essential during such times. If the measures would not have been taken when they did, the status of positive Covid cases would have been much higher than present .

There is still a long way to go before we all defeat this virus. It is necessary for us to understand that this is a time of worldwide epidemic and the situation is serious. It is important that we all play our part to save ourselves and our loved ones form getting effected with the deadly virus.
